Sony secures conditional approval to set up U.S. stablecoin trust bank

Sony Financial Group, the online banking unit of technology giant Sony, has received conditional approval from the US Office of the Comptroller of the Currency to establish a US national trust bank subsidiary, Connectia Trust, to support the issuance and management of dollar-denominated stablecoins. The subsidiary will be capitalized with $40 million and is pending final regulatory approvals. The move comes as stablecoin usage surges, with a record $1.79 trillion in transaction volume last month.

The establishment of Connectia Trust could increase stablecoin adoption, but its impact may be limited by regulatory hurdles. Notably, the subsidiary's $40 million capitalization is relatively modest, which may constrain its ability to scale and support large-scale stablecoin issuance, potentially limiting its market influence.
