Meta kills Muse Image feature that let anyone generate AI photos of Instagram users without consent

Meta has discontinued its Muse Image feature, which allowed users to generate AI images of public Instagram accounts by simply @-mentioning them without consent. The company acknowledged the feature "missed the mark" and shut it down days after its launch. Meta noted it aimed to provide a creative tool while giving users control over their public content's use.

Meta’s quick reversal ignores that "public content" ≠ "publicly *repurposed*"—Instagram’s ToS already allows scraping public posts, but turning any tagged user into a latent prompt without notice crosses a red line; the caveat is that Muse’s shutdown doesn’t address the broader risk of AI platforms normalising unauthorised stylisation of people’s likenesses at scale.
